GEARY GREENHOUSE CENTRE

Environmental Design Thesis

Creating a resilient agricultural centre within the city.

The world is changing rapidly, and with a growing population, small steps towards creating resilient agriculture systems within our city centres are needed.

Redevelopment of our cities and achieving biophilic urban city centres will benefit in fostering social landscape resilience in the face of natural disasters and changes to our climate.

CONCEPT RESEARCH +
MAIN PRINCIPLES/ASPECTS

ECOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES -

green, self-sustaining, resilience

01 | Eliminating wasted energy expended on travel of produce

02 | Rainfall and wastewater recycling systems

03 | Using precedent systems of ‘soil-less’ growing methods

04 | An opportunity to bring agriculture closed to city centres, utilizing less land and eliminating the contribution to urban sprawl

SOCIAL ASPECTS -

educational, place of gather, weekend activity

01 | Creating a local market where consumers know their farmers

02 | Connecting under utilized surrounding green spaces to infrastructure and programme

03 | A space for families to gather and learn about the processes of produce production

04 | Community centre and weekend activity for families to spend time together and play

HEALTH + WELLBEING -

food consciousness, organic produce, green space

01 | Creating food awareness in the neighbourhood and community

02 | Bringing an understanding of agriculture and food production to younger generations

03 | A place to escape the city and be surrounded by greenery

04 | Providing fresh organic produce that is accessible by foot to the surrounding neighbourhoods

An open place of community within the city. A repurposed place of commerce that is open for the people to escape. A centre that’s a walk away from home. Once a ruin but always a place to share. A place to reflect and breathe. Fade into the Earth and soil. Sun bright though grid glass. Light and blue cast a glow on the inside. Away from the centre for a weekend with the family. A pattern of natural pathways of fresh air and green.
